What's the Applications By Rapid Tooling
Rapid tooling a rapid manufacturing way to produce a mold quickly by using rapid manufacturing techniques and conventional tooling practices together. It is known by prototype tooling and soft tooling. It helps manufacturers to get their desired parts quickly and cheaply. Rapid tooling process is also used to build parts of a model from CAD data in a short period of time and at a low cost compared to traditional manufacturing methods. Rapid tooling is used as a way to produce injection molded parts. It is important to understand the concept and realization because there are many way to achieve the same results. Conceptually is any type of injection mold tooling to produce part quickly and inexpensively and allows to test and validate the part before mass production toolings. As for realization, it is anything that allows manufacturers to do this can apply. Prototyping option like 3D printing, CNC, vacuum casting also allows to produce faster and cheaper prototypes. Rapid tooling has its main advantages in process and materials.
Rapid tooling has many advantages. Compared to other manufacturing processes, rapid tooling produces more output. There are wide range of materials can be used. Most thermoplastic and thermosets and silicone can be injection molded. Rapid tooling reduces processes, complex assemble process could be consolidated into a single process. Rapid tooling molds can used to be produce parts in a large number without wearing out.
Injection mold is used for rapid prototyping and to build parts in low to high volume. It is used to build part in thousand units. There are manyRapid Tooling Applications built by injection molding. For example bottle caps, medical syringes, lego bricks and more.
So, how does injection molding process work? Three major components of injection molding process include injection molding machines, raw plastic and the machined mold. The injection molding process is that the raw plastic melted in the injection molding machines and then injected into the mold. When the melted plastic is cooled and solidified, the desired parts removed and come out.
Rapid Tooling is widely used for specific needs which includes prototyping and troubleshooting problems. Rapid tooling is not frequently used for high volume and lone term operations. As the time of rapid tooling is short between begin to complete and CAD file is the only thing for design, rapid tooling is widely use to build mold for commercial operations. Rapid tooling offers a way to provide molds for needed products quickly. Commercial parts can be achieved by rapid prototyping. Rapid tooling offer customization for personal made applications.
There is a wide range of materials can be used in rapid tooling process. For example, nylon, PP, PA6, PA12, HDPE, LDFE, POM and ABS. Nylon is a thermoplastic that has good mechanical properties and abrasion resistance. Nylon is reinforced with glass fibers. There are nylon 30% GF and 40% GF available. PP is the most commonly used material in injection molding process. It has great chemical resistance and it is available in food grade. PA6 has a high degree of toughness and great surface finish. PA12 has low moisture absorption, high dimensional strength. PA12 is flexible. HDFE has a high strength to density ratio. It is impact resistant and long lasting. LDPE is flexible, impact resistant and lightweight. POM is high temperature resistance, chemical resistant and dimensional stable. ABS is an inexpensive low density thermoplastic, It is high impact resistant. There is ABS 30% GF and ABS 40% GF available.
